Firstly, congratulations to Tokyo Girls Style for their 3rd Album in 3 years.

It has been 3 years since the debut of the 5-girl idol group, 東京女子流 (Tōkyō Joshi Ryū) also known as Tokyo Girls’ Style (TGS), having debuted on the 1st of January 2010. Even though the group’s name mentions Tokyo, neither of the members are from there. Another peculiarity of TGS is the secrecy of the member’s age. But at their recent 日本武道館 concert held on the 22nd of December, their age was revealed, making them the youngest female performing group to hold a concert there with an average age of 15 years old.

Despite their young age, they have already performed their first and only overseas in Singapore during 2012.

Before going into the review of the 3rd album, let’s have a brief introduction of the girls!:

Overall the songs are great.

Especially, 約束, which is also the title of the album, the song has a catchy tune that will make you feel like looping it for hours.

I, myself have bought the Blu-ray version (Type A) and have enjoyed all the MVs installed in that disc. From their debut song to their latest, “Bad Flower”, you can feel how much they have grown over the years since their debut.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JnRFB3NPvs

The DVD version though, includes the last 3 MVs from the Blu-ray version plus the making of the 約束 MV and also a video of their outings and live performance during 2 of their Japan tour.

Rating for this album: 4.5/5
It would have been a perfect 5 if only it had included the MV of 約束.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu released her 2nd single of 2013 with Ninja Re Bang Bang, a catchy song with a strong arcade style Japanese music ( Something like the Shinobi series)… However, for this time the PV isn’t actually that weird to me but that’s might be cause I’m very used to animated graphics doing crazy thing…

Still the the chorus remains stuck within my mind, going Ninja re bang bang, blah blah, Ninjya re bang bang, blah blah, and so on, which is pretty much the song for me, since I can’t really catch the full meaning of the Song…

Ninja Re Bang Bang is now available for physical sales in Japan, and Online via iTunes in many countries.

[NEWS] Sayaka Akimoto, AKB48, to graduate

選抜総選挙。|秋元才加オフィシャルブログ「ブキヨウマッスグ。」Powered by Ameba - Google Chrome (2013-04-08 17.13.04)
7th April, Japan
– AKB48′s 2nd generation member and Team K ex-team leader, Sayaka Akimoto, announced that she will be graduating from AKB48 and will not be taking part in the 5th AKB48 General Election. The reason for her graduation is based on her decision to focus on her acting career.

This is announced on her official blog as the deadline for the candidacy of the 5th AKB48 General Election approaches.

Quote from Tokyohive a translation of her Japanese blog post,

The Senbatsu General Election. Today is the deadline to run as a candidate for the general election.

Until the very last minute, I was thinking in my own way if I would participate, and while I was thinking about it, it also led me to start thinking of when the timing for my graduation would be.

These past 8 years, I’ve learned and felt a lot of things, and enjoyed the joys of my youth. Because of Akimoto Sensei, staff members, fans, fellow members, family, and other innumerable supports, Akimoto Sayaka is here now. I’m truly grateful.

However, my thoughts that I wanted to step up to a new world while keeping things I learned and experienced from AKB48 in mind, and that I wanted to gain more experiences in order to pursue my future dream to be an actress, got stronger.

Thus, after thinking thoroughly, I’ve decided to make an announcement at this point of the general election.

I, Akimoto Sayaka, will graduate from AKB48 without participating in the upcoming Senbatsu general elections.

It is not mentioned when she will graduate from the group formally or when her last theater performance with the group will be.  However, for Singapore AKB48 fans out there, she will be  a part of AKB48′s upcoming performance Tokyo Auto Salon in Singapore, on the 13th of April.  This will most likely be the last time you will see her perform ‘live’ in Singapore.  This will mark her 4th visit to Singapore.

In less than 12 hours, Valvrave the Liberator will begin its run on Japanese TV. The show promises much to the audience, with Sunrise in charge of bringing the anime to life, mecha anime being its forte and the combined mechanical design genius of no less than five renowned names, including Kunio Okawara (Gundam) and Takayuki Yanase (Eureka Seven).

Much more than that, came the announcement that T.M. Revolution and Nana Mizuki would be performing the opening theme song for the show, “Preserved Roses”.

The song combines the musical and vocal talents of the two biggest male and female names of the current generation of anisong singers, both having reached the pinnacle of having performed their own solo concerts in the prestigious Tokyo Dome, together with a long string of number one songs on the Oricon chart. Up until today, we have only been teased with a short excerpt of their duet in the third trailer for Valvrave.

With the airing within sight, this collaboration, previously made only of the hopes and dreams of many fans, had its official site launched today. The TV commercial is hosted on a Youtube account created just for this collaboration.

I guess the only thing left is for the promotional video of the single to be released, which T.M.R. has mentioned on his Twitter that it has been filmed a couple of weeks back. Also, it has also been announced that the duo will be performing the song on an upcoming episode of Music Japan.

The question remains, what will you be watching this anime for? The story? The animation? The voice cast (which is quite stellar, I might add)? Or, quite simply, the music?

May’n in her message video  is excited about her first ever performance in Indonesia, and would like to meet everyone soon!

The approachable diva recently released “VIVID” her latest single and performed to a full house at the Japan Expo in France.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxdAk-VzyhA

Top Anisong and J-Pop Diva. Exclusive first performance in Indonesia!

The name “May’n” is derived from her real name, and it demonstrates her hope to always “sing songs that will be everyone’s main theme.”

In 2008, she performed as the singing voice of Diva of the Galaxy, Sheryl Nome, in the TV anime “Macross Frontier.” She released two singles in the same year, both of which instantly became big hits, each placing in the top three on the Oricon Weekly Chart.

The mini-album “May’n*Street” was released in January 2009, and achieved second place on the Oricon Weekly Chart. Since then, all of May’n's releases have consistently entered the top music sales charts.

May’n held her first solo live concert in the Nippon Budokan in January 2010, with tickets completely sold out in a single day. It was followed by an Asia tour in March and a summer domestic tour covering seventeen performances in July. She works passionately on her live shows in Japan and overseas to deliver her songs directly. She successfully held her second solo Budokan concert in March 2011.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-OPdiSY568

She did her second Asia concert tour of six cities in 2011. She also participated in the largest Japanese Culture and Entertainment Festival in Europe, “Japan Expo 2011″, and was well received by fans. On March 20, 2012, a special concert, “May’n*GO! AROUND!!”, was held at the Yokohama Arena, and the next day, on the 21st, her third album “HEAT” was released.

In May 2012, “Chase the world”, the opening theme of the anime “Accel World”, was released and recorded the highest sales amongst all her works. From the end of May 2012, her first worldwide concert tour, “ROCK YOUR BEATS”, began. May’n toured China, Germany, France, and Hong Kong and totalled thirty-four performances, including stops in Japan. On March 2, 2013, her third solo performance in the Nippon Budokan was her most recent notable success.

She fascinates many audiences with her irresistible singing skills and unique voice, and continues to be the must-see “New Generation Female Rock Vocalist.”

See her for the first time, exclusively at AFA Indonesia!

やのあんな _Shape My Story_リリース記念 kawaiiマニア │ kawaii mania #HKTV 096 - YouTube - Google Chrome 2013-08-10 14.28.17

Anna Yano, born 1991, recently released her debut single titled “Shape My Story”  in Japan. Released on the 7th of August, the single is now available in CD stores of Japan and iTunes.

But who is Anna Yano?

She is under the management of Asobi System, the same company as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and before debuting as a singer, a runway and fashion model. In fact, if you follow Harajuku Kawaii TV, you would most likely be familiar with her, since she has been a long time presenter of the online variety show along with other models.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-EhtPW5x1A

Born in 1991, and from Kanagawa Prefecture. Anna Yano is an anime lover, some of the seiyuu she absolutely loves includes Azunyan’s(K-On!) seiyuu, Ayana Taketatsu, and Ai Kayano, Seiyuu for Menma (Anohana). This season, she will be catching Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3 (特例措置団体ステラ女学院高等科C3部), a no brainer due to the fact that she will be singing the opening song for it.

Shape My Story

H1.jpg

The song is produced by Kz(Livetune) for the debuting Anna Yano and the opening song for “C3″. In the PV, there are even a special appearances by Sailor Fuku – Ojisan.
Shape My Story, is relatively fast paced with high pitch that fits her voice.

Overall, the song would be a nice addition to your dance list, I think.
Please enjoy the PV of “Shape My Story”.

Following Asami Imai’s 4th Album, Kono Kumo no Hate, release on the 27th of November, a popular cafe at the heart of Tokyo has begun serving a special Kono note Menu dedicated to the seiyuu and singer.

Asami Imai , perhaps more fondly known as Mingosu by fans is the voice of many popular anime characters. Most notably, Chihaya Kisaragi from THE iDOLM@STER franchise and Kurisu Makise of Steins;Gate.

The Cafe, named Honey Toast Cafe, is situated in Akihabara and serves both sweets and main meals. For the special occasion, a KONONOTE Menu is created, and is available from the 24th of November till 1st of December.

Mingosu

A friend of AFA Channel, also a THE iDOLM@STER producer, recently visits the cafe to bath himself in the delightful atmosphere and the delicious food and we are presenting it here wholesale~

The costume on display is from the PV for Asami Imai’s 星屑のリング.

It is too bad that the special menu will end today along with the display and etc. But the recently opened cafe will be having many more collaborations in the future. So do look out for it when you are in Japan~

[REVIEW]BABYMETAL – LIVE IN SINGAPORE – How Metal was it?

How metal are you anyway? Do you make pop music cry tears to make a Drowning Pool and then strap them up to the electric chair, waiting for Killswitch Engage? Think you can handle it if I were to place you in a Metal Safari and have you trek all the way up to the Nile? Or perhaps you were lying on your couch and enjoying this spectacle as it unfolds in your Dream Theater? lml/ \lml

Well enough about you chump! Chances are if you are reading this, then you are here because you totally missed the BABYMETAL concert last Saturday on 28 December 2013 (what were you doing? Late for the show because you were riding the Night Train?), or are here because you want to find out what the AFA Channel‘s team of writers think about the whole show? It was certainly not a Stairway to Heaven, but there sure was plenty of Lights and Sound.

BABYMETAL – LIVE IN SINGAPORE 2013

Now if you are here to watch a live band rock it out with 3 girls prancing their cute choreography at the front, then you will be sorely disappointed. But if you are here to see a performance with heavy metal music and appropriately fitting dance choreography and cute girls, then this is for you.

Also, bear with me for the performance review, it can get quite in depth. I summarised it at the bottom just in case.

Picture: SOZO|AMUSE INC|Kenneth Lim

The dance moves of the girls kind of fit the music and atmosphere for the most part. The back-up dancers at the back – or minions as I liked to call them, were quite convincing. I mean, what’s with the full line up of music instruments? Drums, guitars, amps and all? Certainly for the most part, the back-up dancers were doing their thing, providing the suitable backdrop to the girls’ dancing and singing – a completely mental band of musicians pumping out riffs and blast beats at a metal concert.

Convincing as it was, I felt a little unnerving at times to hear the drum track going on while the back-up dancer behind the drums stood up to engage the crowd – I mean hey! Aren’t you supposed to be playing that sick roll and really difficult to do double-bass at 16th notes? But hey, your point was to get the crowd to get really crazy and active throughout the concert and back the girls up without so much as standing out, so I guess you really did your stuff.

Throughout the entire concert there were periods of pause where they had some kind of a transition video, if you would like to call it that. Those were animations that seem to depict a really sad scene where (from the back of my head) idol music was trumping all else and that metal music was only being played by the rebels – being Babymetal themselves. There was even one where they made Su-metal some sort of anti-hero? A “Red Rider“, that’s what they called her.

Picture: SOZO|AMUSE INC|Kenneth Lim

While I would normally find the overuse of animation and videos for a music concert a faux pas (your mileage may vary), the animations put up at the transitions were quite well timed to say the least. And hey, it kinda set the mood for the concert too, kind of like the concert had a story to tell as we watched the entire length of it. Now I found that to be a neat little thing, despite my dislike for animation to be used (I came to watch a concert, not to watch animation. Gimme my music!), because it isn’t everyday that you get to walk into a concert to listen to the band perform, but also have some kind of a theme to it and have kind of a story to tell. Cheesy as it was (I kind of cringed at the part about idol music being dominant and that Metal music was played by the underdogs part), it still kept the flow of things going, and was something new, or rather, something that I have not seen being done very often. I like that, I truly do. Well played girls.

As for the build up of hype throughout the concert? You bet it built up alright. The fans’ enthusiasm makes it harder to pin exactly how hyped up they were, I mean they were practically rushing forward to just a feet or two away from the stage and waving the glow sticks and being generally like what fans are like at the onset of “BABYMETAL DEATH“, their opening act, which they performed after one of their short animation clips. “君とアニメが見たい” (“Kimi to anime ga mitai“) and “いいね!- Iine!” would follow next, with plenty of dancing and strobbing lights and sound to keep the excited fan pumped up, and gives the not so warmed up knuckleheads some time to get comfy in the concert hall and begin to slowly tap and headbang along with the others in the pack.  ”いいね!- Iine!” might leave you thinking you walked into some Initial D match, what with that Eurobeat sounding backing, but hey, I ain’ complaining. It did make me feel like raving though!

Picture: SOZO|AMUSE INC|Kenneth Lim

Apart from ”おねだり大作戦” (“Onedari Daisakusen“), I didn’t find the other two songs between the second and third transition video to be anything much. I was told that ”チョコレート- Chocolate” was a new song, but it was okay at best. The same went with “ウ・キ・ウ・キ★ミッドナイト” (“U ki u ki ★ middonaito“). “おねだり” had the quintessential materials that makes a BABYMETAL song a BABYMETAL song – cute voices, a really well done choreography, and that raw gutteral post metal playing behind the girls. I expected to hear that and that song basically delivers that all in one package. The rest in this set of three? Not really. Kinda “meh” to put it bluntly.

As for the atmosphere? Well, it still more or less seems like what it was at the beginning, if not just slightly dying down a little? Really fans? You can do better than that! But I should have kept my criticism that their lack of faith was disturbing because what proceeded to happen was the third transition video, which had a kind of story to build up to a song done by Su-metal – “紅月” (“Akatsuki“).

Everything about it was so right. It built up! Well that’s what I have been waiting for! Brushing aside fake performing skeletons! This is it! And I guess the crowd kind of shared a similar sentiment, perhaps? Because they started to get really high man. This, was the point where things start to ramp up right until the encore. And the songs that follow after that were really rocking it! It’s like they saved all the titan hits for the end! Well I sure did not see that coming, and would totally accept the hammer strike that takes the form of  ”Catch Me If You Can“, “ヘドバンギャー!!” (the Headbanger song, a personal favorite of mine :D), and “ド・キ・ド・キ☆モーニング” (“Doki Doki Morning“, which by the way, totally would sound like a good wake up alarm, no pun intended in any way).

Calls for an encore were answered in the form of “メギツネ ” (“Megitsune“) and a final parting song was presented in the form of “イジメ、ダメ、ゼッタイ” (“Ijime, Dame, Zettai“, damn this one sounded like it was really rocking it!). Oh and how can I forget the crowd? Once the encore was called for, the fans basically got to the point where they were at the most excited they can get for the whole concert that day. How can you deny them their fun? As much as it was pleasing to watch the choreography and lights show that was going on at the stage, I couldn’t help but smile at how excitable the crowd was.

Picture: SOZO|AMUSE INC|Kenneth Lim

tl;dr:

Concert was awesome. There were a few transition videos slotted in between after every three or so songs. Those animations were really awesome to watch as they kind of told a story and set a theme. Concert started on kind of a high that got a little muted around the middle but that was fine because it built up after the third transition that led to the last three songs before the encore. The encore was awesome, and ended the concert well. Crowd seems happy, writer is also happy for them.

The Verdict

Sorry to the SRS BZNS (serious business) people who want to watch a live band. You probably won’t find it here. But hey, you should really loosen up and just enjoy the performance! You are watching some revolutionary stuff at work yo! There was even a nod to the venue by the group (yeah… that merlion thing, I am looking at you)!

Personally? You bet I was one of those SRS BZNS chaps. As much as it still leaves me with a sour taste and a feeling that I did not get what I came for, I still managed to get something out of it. And that alone is more than enough. I came out to be entertained and to be impressed.

Was I entertained? Despite for the fact that I did not manage to see a live band at the works doing their stuff, I was still entertained! The dance was good and the music totally blended in with the dance and the idol group’s theme of being metal and still having idol elements in them.

And was I impressed? For proving that the show could still entertain despite not having what I came to see? Hell yeah I was impressed alright!

Picture: BABYMETAL Facebook Page

Did the girls make the place absolutely rocking it? Yep they sure did! Were the audiences enjoying themselves? Seems like it! You guys almost wanted to start a freaking mosh pit! Should you turn up to see a live band? Nope, they were all dancers, who looked really good with the instruments. Would you enjoy yourself? If you are here to see Su-metal, Moametal and Yuimetal dancing along to some idol-sounding metal music, and are going to just ignore your light sticks and totally enjoy the heck out of yourself, then yes, you would.

Here’s hoping they will appear at an AFA Anisong concert in the future!

Hatano Wataru will be releasing his 4th single, Hikari, on 19 February 2014 under music label DIVE II entertainment. Compared to the soothing ballads in his earlier single, Kimi wa Boku ga Kaeru Basho (君はぼくが帰る場所) released almost a year ago, the catchy rock tunes of Hikari are definitely a vocal upgrade.

hatano_hikari

Hikari is also the ending theme of this season’s mystery-action anime, HAMATORA, in which Hatano voices the stoic half of the Minimum Holder PI duo, Murasaki.

Catch a short glimpse of the PV released on the official Youtube channel:

Having won the Best Male Newcomer Award in the second annual Seiyuu Awards in 2008, Hatano continues to voice characters in a range of anime genres. For those who are unfamiliar with him, you may have heard him as the honest and down-to-earth Handa-san in Shirokuma Cafe, gruff Gajeel Redfox in Fairy Tail or even responsible “daddy” Segawa Yuuta in Papa no Iukoto o Kikinasai! He is also highly active in the areas of drama CDs and otome games, playing leading roles in Storm Lover and Glass Heart Princess.

Aside from multiple anime or character-related music releases, Hatano has also released 4 singles since his singing debut in 2011. He has provided vocals for the opening theme 「Wake Up! My Heart!!」and ending theme songs「My Hero My No.1」 for the anime Battle Spirits: Heroes.
